Certified copies
In some cases you might be asked to/wish to make a certified copy of a client's identification documents. See our note on making certified copies. If you are certifying identification documents over a video call, then you should bear in mind the following:
- Ask your client to send you a copy (i.e. a picture) of the requisite ID.
- Video-call your client.
- Have your client hold up the original of the ID and compare your copy with their original.
- Check the photo in the ID with their image on the video call.
- Ask them to flick through the pages, turn docs over, etc., so you get more of a feel for whether they are showing you a genuine document.
- Send the copies of the documents to the Clients Team (clients@keystonelaw.co.uk) and in your covering email explain that you have seen the originals yourself.
- You should have no concerns about the client or the ID they provide at all; if you do, then it is better they be certified in person.
