When a lawyer leaves the firm, whether by retirement or otherwise, and where that lawyer was a Client Owner of a client remaining with the firm, then Central Office will ensure that other suitable colleagues are brought in to look after that client's ongoing needs. Central Office will become the Client Owner of that client, though in special cases where a second colleague has assisted greatly in looking after the client through the departure of the first colleague, then that second colleague may ask the Director of Community and Engagement to become the Client Owner of that client. Leaving lawyers may not gift their clients to colleagues on their departure.
